More than Window Shades – Bamboo for Floors
It might sound like a novel idea, but it’s a fact, bamboo is now used for much more than window blinds, it makes excellent flooring. Bamboo floors have become popular in recent years for many reasons.
One of the main reasons behind the popularity explosion of bamboo floors is the bamboo plants ability to replenish itself in a short period of time. With so much emphasis on going green and saving the Earth’s resources, bamboo is the ideal choice, though that is not the only reason for choosing bamboo floors.
Bamboo flooring is also very durable. Although it is not an actual wood when bamboo stalks are processed and made into planks for flooring they are very durable.
The unique structure of the bamboo stalks makes the finished product as strong as maple flooring and much stronger than oak flooring. It is highly dent resistant which adds to its longevity.
Bamboo floors are also very elegant. Homeowners can choose to leave them their natural bamboo color, which is very light and beautiful or they can have them stained to their desired color.
Purchasing Bamboo
Now that the reasons for choosing bamboo are clear, there are some things to consider when purchasing bamboo. As with any investment, it’s always better to know what to look for ahead of time instead of finding out later when the purchase is complete.
First, compare pricing. Bamboo floors are really economical, however, as with any product there are always companies who like to overprice, these companies know that some people think higher price means a better product, which of course it doesn’t’.
There are two styles of bamboo flooring. Compare them and decide which look is best suited for the room. Vertical cut planks have cleaner, finer lines and a less visible grain while horizontal cut planks have a rougher, grainy appearance, more of a rough look.
Bamboo floor coloring is another consideration. As mentioned earlier, natural bamboo flooring is light in color and quite attractive, though it does need a clear finish to protect it from scratches.
Another option is to purchase bamboo floors that have been carbonized. Although carbonization makes the wood a little softer, the coloring is transformed naturally and is throughout the wood, not just on the top.
Finally, there is bamboo floors that have been stained. Staining is the option to choose if coloring is desired. The drawback to staining is that it takes the naturalness away from the floor.
When purchasing bamboo floors, it is also important to add in enough to account for waste. Typically this is about five to ten percent extra than is needed for the room. Waste is inevitable when cutting and occasionally occurs due to accidental damage.
Finally, when purchasing bamboo, consider the room it is going to be installed in. Bamboo floors should not be installed in bathrooms or other rooms that has high moisture content. Although bamboo is moisture resistant, prolonged exposure to rooms high in moisture can cause them to warp and possibly even void the warranty.
