Cheap Window Treatments
Cheap window treatments don't define the look, only the price. Creating window treatments can be affordable if you are doing the job yourself. A window treatment is simply a decorative element placed on, in, around, or over a window for your interior design. This means ANYTHING can be a window treatment, drapes, sheers, blinds, shelves or shutters.
Valances
A valance or swag as it is commonly referred to, is a short piece of drapery, hung on a rod across the length of the window area, to hide drapery hardware and can be used in conjunction with drapes shutters, blinds or can stand alone. Balloon valance, triangle valance and scarf valance are most common when considering this type of treatment and can be purchased in a how to kit. Pricing on valances range from under twenty dollars to over one hundred dollars. With that in mind, this type of window treatment accommodates any budget and any interior design.
Pelmets
A pelmet is a board installed across the top of the window looking similar to a valance. The pelmet is usually made from plywood and can be painted or covered with coordinating materials that match the upholstery on the furniture in the room. Pelmets actually will insulate a window, saving on cooling and heating costs. As with a valance, pelmet may be used together with other materials like sheers and drapes, or can stand alone in the interior design.
Drapes
Drapes are usually heavy curtains, made from dense fabrics like velvet, tweed and heavy cotton linen. Drapes are utilized for blocking out direct light; some come with a plastic or rubber type backing that is designed to insulate the window from extreme temperatures. Black out drapes can be expensive about forty dollars per panel, but well worth the expense as it will help save money on heating and cooling costs, essentially paying for themselves. These work especially well in bedroom design.
Sheers
Sheers are light-weight curtains made from muslin, chiffon or lightweight cotton linens that diffuse the light coming through the windows. Sheers are great for children's rooms or even small rooms that have natural lighting sources. Coming in a rainbow of colors, prints and designs ranging from sequined bling to day glow green, sheers are versatile and complement any interior design. Starting at about seven dollars per panel this type of window treatment is easy on the wallet.
Blinds
Blinds are installed in the window frame and are used diffuse, filter, block the light and insulate the window from extreme temperatures. Blinds are made from a variety of materials like PVC, wood, paper bamboo, canvas and vinyl. Blinds are in category all their own, ranging in styles, colors and prices. Blinds are usually the first choice any renter or homeowner makes when choosing a window treatment that is stylish and affordable for interior design.
