A Guide to Selecting the Perfect Drapery and Hardware
As an interior designer, I have had many experiences with pairing just the right draperies to fit my clients wants and needs. The addition of window treatments is typically one of the last items installed in a room and makes one of the biggest impacts in pulling it all together. Draperies are not only there for their good looks, but they also serve a purpose and fit many different functions. Selecting that "just right" look can sometimes be a daunting task for even the most savvy home decorators. So many fabrics, so many styles. Here are some of the tips I give to clients when making these all important decisions.
First and foremost, think about what function you want your window treatment to serve. Blocking out light in a bedroom or a media room is a major concern for many so choosing blackout lining is key. For some, on the other hand, showcasing a beautiful view is top priority and having decorative panels that stay stationary serve as a wonderful frame. Another function to think about is what happens in the space you are needing window treatments. A formal space that does not have much foot traffic may call for long flowing drapery that puddles on the floor, whereas a family space may call for a roman shade that can be pulled up and out of the way when little ones run around. Make a list of your functional priorities and go from there to fabric and style selection.
There are several things to think about when picking out a fabric for draperies: texture, weight, pattern, and color. The texture of a linen can add a luxurious feel without being too formal. When unlined, linen takes on a breezy casualness. The crisp shine of a silk taffeta gives an elegant presence. On a personal note, I always enjoy adding pattern to window treatments as it adds a custom, designer touch. When doing a patterned window treatment, I always recommend getting pillows in the same patterned fabric along with pillows in a coordinating fabric to bring the pattern around to other parts of the room giving a more cohesive look. As another tip, if you are planning on repainting your room, make your final selection of paint color after you choose fabrics, as it is much easier to find a paint to match your fabric and not so easy the other way around.
The internet can be a useful tool to find the type of style you are looking for. Having inspiration photos always helps when communicating to a designer about window treatments. There are a wide variety of styles to accommodate everything from a historical home to a contemporary high rise loft. Regardless of the style you have, having the correct amount of fullness is key. Those folds and ripples you see in the draperies in design magazines come from having enough fabric in the width of the panels. The beauty of custom made drapery is that you can get that look that you can not get with ready-mades.
So when on the search for that final touch in your space in the form of drapery or shades, here are the things to remember: the function they need to serve, the type of room are they going in, the feel and style you want, and inspiration. When bringing all this information to a design professional, you should be able to accomplish what you are looking for.
