Six Holiday Charities to Give to This Season
Now more than ever, so many families and individuals are in need. The holiday season offers us the chance to let our compassionate sides flourish by giving to others and helping those who need it to survive and thrive. Instead of buying a gift for yourself this year, consider giving the money to help the home-bound elderly, children spending their holiday in a hospital, or to a hungry family.
Even if you feel you have less to give your own family this year, try asking everyone to donate their stocking stuffer money to help someone less fortunate. Giving to others always makes us appreciate what we have that much more.
Charitable organizations across the nation work hard to support those in need, and we've chosen six that will help you make a powerful impact on those who receive your time, money, or other charitable donation.
- The Salvation Army Angel Giving Tree online presented by JCPenney - The Angel Giving Tree onlineis a national, online adoption program that allows internet users to provide children and seniors in need with holiday gifts. This program provides gifts to children and seniors who, due to financial hardship, may not otherwise receive any present. You can donate online through JCPenney from the comfort of your own home knowing your brought joy to the needy this year.
- St. Jude Children's Research Hospital - St. Jude's Hospital is the only pediatric cancer research center where no child is ever denied treatment because of the family's inability to pay. Musical artist Jewel and other favorites are asking their loyal fans to help them reach their fundraising goal to support St. Jude this holiday season. You can also give your Facebook friends a St. Jude virtual gift while giving needy St. Jude patients the gift of life. There are many ways to donate time and money and help children with cancer enjoy the holiday season with their family.
- Meals on Wheels - During the holidays many seniors are left alone in the cold without access to a hot meal.Meals on Wheels works to end senior hunger by offering over 5,000 local Senior Nutrition Programs in the United States. These MOW programs provide well over one million meals to seniors who need them. Some programs serve meals while others deliver meals directly to the homes of seniors whose mobility is limited. Currently the charity is offering a holiday gift match through December 31 that will double the impact of your donation.
- City Harvest - City Harvest is the world's first food rescue organization, dedicated to feeding New York City's hungry men, women, and children, but without your support and donations families will go hungry this cold holiday season. This year City Harvest will collect 28 million pounds of excess food from all segments of the food industry, including restaurants, corporate cafeterias, and farms. This food is then delivered free of charge to nearly 600 community food programs and each week helps over 300,000 hungry New Yorkers find their next meal. Your donation will feed the hungry.
- Adopt a Family Through the Salvation Army - Adopt a Family is an anonymous program where a sponsor can "adopt" a family to support with food and/or gifts at Christmas through the Salvation Army. The sponsor has the opportunity to specify the makeup and size of the family he or she wishes to support. Your donations can make a struggling family's holiday dreams come true.
- Child's Play - Children who are sick in the hospital during the holidays may feel like they are missing out on all the fun. Millions of donations of toys, games, books and cash for sick kids in children's hospitals across North America and the world have been collected by Child's Play and given to children in need. During the holiday season, all kids enjoy new toys and for unfortunate sick children stuck in hospitals during the holidays, your donations can really make a difference in their recovery. You can purchase requested items from online wish lists, or make a cash donation that helps out Child's Play partners everywhere.
