Curtains and Drapery: How do they differ?
How do you know what the difference between curtains and draperies is?
Some people mix them up, after all they both seem similar because they both adorn windows with fabric. So how would you know which window décor is called a curtain and when does window treatment merit the name drapery?
Here are some pointers that will help you differentiate these two.
The type of fabric:
- Curtains are made from lightweight fabrics like sheers, lace, organza, calico and thin silk.
- Draperies are made from heavier weight fabrics like heavier silk, fauxsilk, jacquard, and velvet. They are usually lined to add even more body.
The style:
- Curtains are rather casual in style, and therefore are mostly window length, however occasionally they could be floor length, too.
- Draperies are more formal and are almost always floor length or sometimes even longer, creating a rich effect called puddling on the floor.
The purpose:
- Curtains are used as window coverings, since they are almost always be opened and closed easily. For example, sheer curtains can be used diffuse the sunlight shining into the windows.
- Drapery is mainly used for decoration and is usually stationary and cannot be opened easily. Sometimes though they can be fully closed to offer privacy and insulation, but its primary function remains decoration.
For the best use, you can combine drapery with curtains on one window. Use the curtain as the window covering like sheer curtains and the drapery around it as a decoration. This way of window decorating is called layering taking the best of both decor.
Complete your window decor by adding a valance or drapery hardware as a finishing touch.
