What is External Insulation?
In the UK some older houses do not have a cavity between two layers of wall. This means that the owners are unable to use traditional cavity wall insulation to insulate their home. There are 7 million of these homes in the UK, from homes built around the 1930s and 50s, and increasingly, they are looking for a solution to their problem.
We all know that increasing the amount of insulation in a house will mean that it is both warmer to live in and more energy efficient. Insulating a home makes it more green – better for the environment – and also reduces the cost of heating bills. Previously the solution for the owners of solid wall houses was to internally dry line the house, but this meant expensive redecoration post treatment. So the construction industry put its heads together and came up with an exterior wall cladding treatment. This kind of external insulation allows the solid wall house to be treated on the outside.
This treatment is retrofitted to the house on the outside of the existing solid walls. It wraps the house in an external jacket of insulation, by adding thermal insulation boards to the outside. There are several types of board to choose from depending on what you want your final exterior finish to be and the cost. These include expanded polystyrene, Rockwool and Kingspan phenolic boards. The thickness of the boards used is dependent on the existing roof structure and the amount of insulation desired. On top of these boards is then placed a render which is bond with the board and provide a breathable barrier. The render is then over-coated with a decorative finish that is weatherproof. The decorative finish gives the desired final appearance to the new wall covering.
As an alternative to a render finish it is possible to use a tile effect covering, this may be required in some areas due to planning restrictions or if the property is in a conservation area.
